Do I have to book in advance?


Yes. At present all tickets must be booked in advance of your visit.




Why are you charging a minimum fare of £35 per compartment/accessible space?


The £35 minimum fare reflects the capacity of our compartments. Please be aware that online bookings include an additional non-refundable £2.50 booking fee paid to our ticketing provider, TicketSource.




How many people can fit in a compartment?


Up to 8 people. For comfort, we recommend no more than 4-5 adults and 2-3 small children per compartment. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to ensure that your booking complies with any Welsh Government restrictions on meeting people at the time.




How will my tickets be delivered?


By email. Once you have completed your order you will receive a confirmation email containing your tickets. Simply scan them on the contactless scanning device in the booking hall upon your arrival.




Are you pre-allocating specific compartments?


No. When you arrive at Furnace Sidings there will be a short queue for you to join before taking an available compartment. All are standard class and the glass doors separating the compartments from the corridors allow you to see the scenery on both sides.




Is my ticket valid all day?


No. At present all tickets are valid for ONE round trip from Furnace Sidings to Furnace Sidings only. We regret that our Pay Once, Ride All Day policy is suspended until further notice.




I am travelling on my own or in a smaller group. Can I get a discount?


Unfortunately not. Due to the need to manage visitor numbers whilst adapting to the increased cost of our operation, we are unable to offer any discounts at the current time.




What are the terms and conditions of your NP discount?


From Saturday 5th to Sunday 27th June 2021, those living in the NP postcode area can enjoy reduced price travel on our railway. To take advantage of the offer, local residents simply need to apply the offer code HERITAGE25 when purchasing from our online ticket provider TicketSource and provide proof of address (e.g. a bank statement or utility bill) whilst checking in at our ticket office on their day of travel. Those living in the area who have already purchased tickets will be provided with tearoom vouchers equivalent to the discounted value to spend on refreshments and treats during their visit. Please note that in line with our current 'pre-booking only' policy, the offer is only valid for tickets that have been purchased in advance via https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/blaenavon/blaenavons-heritage-railway/welcome-back-to-blaenavon-2021/ DISCOUNT TERMS AND CONDITIONS The 25% off applies to the total cost of booking and must be applied whilst checking out on TicketSource. The offer code will be valid for bookings on the 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th and 27th June 2021 only. When checking in at our Ticket Office, those taking advantage of the code must provide suitable proof of address (e.g. a driving licence, bank statement or utility bill etc.). If I miss my booked train will I be able to catch a later one?


It depends on available space. Although we will try our best to reseat you on a later service if possible, we cannot guarantee this. We advise that you arrive approximately 15-30 minutes before your scheduled departure to prevent missing your train.




Are you collecting any data for contact tracing services?


Yes. We are proud to support the Welsh Government's Test, Trace, Protect strategy, and we will be retaining contact details of our customers, making them available to relevant public bodies as necessary. By booking with us, you will be consenting to us collecting and using your personal information for this purpose. Unless needed by public health bodies, all contact-tracing data will be securely destoryed 21 days after collection.




Where do I board the train?


Furnace Sidings. At present all passengers must begin and complete their journey at Furance Sidings.




Can I start or end my journey at another station?


Passengers can begin/end their journey at either Blaenavon High Level or Whistle Inn Halt by prior arrangement.




How long does the journey take?


50 minutes. The journey will last for approximately 50 minutes from departing Furance Sidings to your arrival back at the station.




Do I have to wear a face covering?


In line with current Welsh Government regulations, passengers aged 11 and over are required to wear face covering across many areas of our railway. Indoor spaces: It is currently mandatory to wear face coverings whilst in indoor public spaces in Wales. Station platforms: Welsh legislation currently requires the public to wear face coverings whilst on station platforms. Carriage corridors: Passengers must wear a face covering whilst in carriage corridors, ensuring that they maintain a 2 metre social distance from others wherever possible. Private compartments: If you are travelling only with your household/support bubble, then you may remove your mask/covering whilst inside your private compartment. Please remember to replace your face covering upon leaving the compartment, taking any used items with you. Socially distanced 'open' carriages: Face coverings must be worn at all times in line with Welsh Government legislation. Exemptions: Exemptions apply to children aged under 11 and those who are unable to wear a face covering because of a health condition or disability.




Can I alight at Whistle Inn/Blaenavon High Level?


Yes. Passengers may alight at either Whistle Inn Halt or Blaenavon High Level. There is a 15 minute wait at Blaenavon High Level whilst the locomotive runs around, and passengers are welcome to venture onto the platform to watch this take place. Please ensure that you maintain social distancing at all times whilst doing so.




Are trains serving Big Pit Halt?


Not at present. Unfortunately, given the increased operating costs (both financial and in terms of volunteer hours), we regret that trains will not be operating to Big Pit Halt. Intending visitors for the Big Pit National Coal Museum of Wales should access this attraction via alternative means.




Will the tearoom and giftshop be open?


The Firemans Shovel Tearoom: Yes! The tea-room will be open to serve hot and cold drinks, ice-cream and light snacks such as cakes. Eric's Emporium giftshop: Yes! Eric's Emporium will be open stocking a range of gifts, toys and souvenirs.




Are the toilets open?


Yes. However, please be aware that space is limited, and you may have to join a short queue before using them.




Can I wait inside the station before my train?


In the immediate station area. Due to the relatively confined nature of the station building, we ask those waiting around and purchasing refreshements from the tearoom to do so outside. This will help us to maintain social distancing.




Can I bring a picnic?


Yes. We have benches located around the Furnace Sidings station site. Feel free to use these for your picnic, ensuring that your group maintains a safe social distance from others at all time. Please dispose of any litter in the bins provided, or take it home with you.




Can I bring my dog?


Yes! Well-behaved dogs are welcome and travel for free. Just please keep them off the seats - dog hair isn't easy to get out of our heritage upholstery!




What do your compartments look like?


The image depicts a typical compartment in our 1950s British Railways carriages.




What do your socially distanced 'open' carriages look like?


The images shows the interior of our main 1950s British Railways 'open' carriage. Alternative bays will be out of use to increase space between households. Please be aware that Welsh Government regulations currently require passengers aged 11 and over to wear face coverings in these vechiles at all times unless medically exempt.




How many passengers are included in the ticket price?


Compartments: Our compartment carriages include 5 people in the standard £35 flat rate, with additional passengers charged £5 each up to a maximum of 8 people. Open carriages: Seating in our open carraiges includes up to 2 people in the standard £20 fare, with additional passengers charged at a rate of £5 each.
